Managing writing assignments

  | Doing the writing assignment and handing it in: Student operations.
  | Paper management: The paper goes through a number of steps, including being handed in, being commented on, and being returned to the student. At each step, a copy of the modified paper is moved to a new location on the server. A database keeps track of where the most recent modification is stored. So, if the TA makes comments and grades the paper, then the Prof makes further changes, only the most current version is available, even though each prior version remains on the server. The prof or student don't need to worry about this, as it's automatic.
  | Handing it in: The student must "hand in" an assignment by selecting the assignment, "Doing" it, clicking on "Edit My Paper" and then clicking the "Hand In" button. This puts a copy of the writing assignment in the "HandIns" directory" waiting for action by the professor or reviewer. Note: the student may elect to hand in the paper before the due time, so that the TA or professor can give feedback prior to grading. However, after the due time, the assignment may only be handed in if it has not previously been handed in. This protects the student from making changes to the paper after grading begins.

  | Student does a review: student selects the assignment in the assignments index, or selects the "Reviews" for the assignment and goes to the assignment. Note: Suppose the assignment is "Plate Tectonics Paper", then the Reviews part will be listed as "Plate Tectonics Paper Reviews". If the student selects the "Reviews" assignment, it will not be possible to edit or hand in the assignment. Using either option, the student will click on the "Do Next Review Step" button and a review will be displayed. The system keeps track so the correct review is presented. First, each (in random order) of the calibration papers, then 3 randomly selected peer papers, then the student's own paper are presented.
