Comparison of UCLA system and EarthEd Online:

Strengths of UCLA cpr system:
1) Polished, ready to go system with lots of support.
2) small library of cpr assignments already exists.

Limitations of UCLA cpr:
1) it only supports cpr writing, so is limited in scope
2) no support for image editing. Linking of images is done in html. Students must edit images in externally, which requires learning another interface.

Strengths of EarthEd Online:
1) broad in scope. Some of EarthEd capabilities that are absent in the UCLA system are:

  • graphics editing and linking
  • data modules that allow point and click creation of data plots and images
  • auto graded homework problems
  • student feedback surveys
  • access to current course grade

2) by Spring, there will be a threaded discussion board. I also plan on adding a discussion screen based on a blog metaphor. This will allow "Just in Time" teaching techniques and facilitate shorter writing assignments with more unstructured student interaction and discussion. These will also embed the image editing and linking capability that the writer has.

Weaknesses of EarthEd:
1) It's a new system and there will be more hassles with bugs
2) Distribution of software requires more planning. Web download will be implemented, but the large data modules are better distributed on CD or DVD.
